🖥️ What is a DBMS (Database Management System)?

A Database Management System (DBMS or SGBD in Spanish) is the software that allows creating, managing, modifying, and querying a database.
It is the intermediary tool between the user, applications, and the physical database.

Main functions of a DBMS

  • Define the structure of the database (tables, relationships, views, indexes, procedures).
  • Store, query, modify, and delete data.
  • Control access and permissions of users and applications.
  • Ensure the security and privacy of data.
  • Maintain the integrity and consistency of information.
  • Perform data backups and recovery in case of failures.

Examples of DBMS

  • Relational: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MariaDB, SQLite.
  • Non-relational (NoSQL): MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, CouchDB.

Why is a DBMS important?

  • Facilitates the administration of complex data and large volumes of information.
  • Allows multiple users to work at the same time without conflicts.
  • Optimizes the performance of queries and transactions.
  • Ensures data integrity and protection.

The DBMS is the heart of any database system, allowing everything to work efficiently and securely.
